Jazz w "Promie"

The collapse of the wolf myth

The collapse of the wolf myth.

One fine day a friend of mine lent me a book, which I cannot forget. It is not a new one, but I’ve never read it before. The Canadian nature scientist Farley Mowat, who is the author, took me into a world full of nature in his book “Never cry wolf” (“Nie taki wilk straszny”).
The main character is a young scientist conducting research on wolves behaviour, and their influence on caribou species strength. He went on his mission with some assumptions, based on popular opinions, and had to either prove or discard them. The story is full of unexpected situations, a very specific sense of humour and love for the wild nature and wolves, which are very friendly and open-minded mammals. The myth of dangerous wolf species turns out to be false and readers are able to know more about these very interesting and intelligent animals. Following the story we are completely immersed in a magical world. The book deals with very important themes in a really engaging way. As an avid reader I wasn’t able to put the book down. I really like the way it’s written. I also appreciate the knowledge which we can get from reading it. It’s not a scientific book, but a popular one, for the average Joe, but I found it very educational. The main disadvantage of such a good read is the number of pages. I am truly convinced that the book is too thin.
The story was adapted by Carrol Ballard in 1983 and I am going to look for the film “Never cry wolf” (“Już nigdy nie zawyje wilk”). I am also a big fan of the other books of Farley Mowat, who died in 2014 at the age of 92. I highly recommend this precious read to make up your own mind about animals, who exist not only in fairy tales.

jest takie miejsce...

Wyjątkowa architektura w Polsce?
Tak, to możliwe. I to nie od dziś i nie od roku...
Zbudowano ją już po wojnie i jest... Polska.
Praktyczna i piękna, choć z materiałów, jakie wówczas były dostępne i popularne w użyciu.
Powstała jako swego rodzaju centrum targowe, konferencyjne i koncertowe.
Dziś nadal jest używana, ale w budynku mieści się też obiekt muzealny...

The most mood – influential films I’ve ever watched.

The most mood – influential films I’ve ever watched.

When I’m really depressed, I’m taking a DVD from the shelf and watching the film, which always makes me feel better. I have only one such film. This is animation made by artists known mostly as musicians. It was released in 1968, so it’s not a brand new. But it still works.
I’d love to listen to music, when I’m stressed and need some rest. I ‘d like the energy of colours, which are helpful to recover and to be full of beans. My favorite film is colourful, with very fast passing images, full of unexpected ideas and visualisations. I just watch it. I allow wonderful animations and great well-known music just to fill me up. It’s passing through me and changes my attitude to the world. I really do not know, how about you. You need to suck it and see. The film title is “Yellow submarine”.
On the contrary… Is there any depressing film, which I can recommend for some reasons? To be honest – yes, there is one. I’ve seen the film, which is known as quite important in history of cinematography and I found it a depressing one. It brings up some important questions tackling the topic of human being’s existence, values, health… Despite these valuable features, it’s depressing. The plot and the main character’s history are very difficult to carry on, if you are a fragile person. I highly recommend this film, but I have to warn that sensitive spectator should be very careful, and take these disadvantages into consideration. The film’s title is “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest” (1975).
It’s a pleasure to share with readers my very own opinions about so crucial masterpieces of cinematography. I hope you find them as food for your thoughts.

Must read

Years ago a friend of mine brought me a book and said that it’s a must-read. It was a science-fiction novel written by Orson Scott Card, titled “Ender’s game”. Although I was never an avid reader of this genre, I gave it a chance.
The book was published in 1985 and during the same year it received a Nebula Award. Furthermore, in 1986 it also got a Hugo Award and a nomination for the Locus Award. Science-fiction lovers will know what that means about the novel.
The plot is quite simple but interesting. The Government needs to save an endangered world and the only hope is a brilliant kid. The situation is a real challenge not only for him.
The main protagonist must take obligatory military training, which is very demanding. Ender Wiggin is a well-created convincing person, with weak and strong features. Readers can observe that from one adventure to another he becomes more mature and responsible, as well as learning to deal with problems, making decisions and managing people.
In such company I discovered the rules of the planning process and building strategy, which often required the determination and total devotion of other people, especially kids, involved in the project.
Was this aspect really crucial for me then? It unexpectedly opened my eyes to new important possibilities, which I still appreciate. I also gained some insight into human behaviour and ways of thinking as well as dealing with emotions in difficult situations.
Needless to say, the book turned out to be well-written, very absorbing and unputdownable. It was a pleasure to feel immersed in reading it. I highly recommend this book, especially to teenagers and young adults.

How to deal with our cultural heritage?

How to deal with our cultural heritage?

Let me make an assumption that almost everyone thinks that cultural heritage is unmeasurable value of each nation. It’s not easy to protect it in money-oriented world. To save history and it’s signs characteristic for local communities we are working on some projects supported by local people and some governmental funds.
There is a lot of needs and any funds are not sufficient. If we want to save memories and historical buildings for the next generations, we will have to choose between the priorities. We are not able to skip funding for museums and old buildings’ renovation. The government should offer some incentives for private investors, to share these responsibilities wherever it’s possible. The historical places, buildings with their premises can be changed into significant culture centers with exhibition areas for contemporary art, shops with souvenirs, artistic handmade goods and local small business products. There could be placed departments of museums as well. Then, funds for renovation of valuable for the region buildings would be given to the museums, which would renovate and re-adapt them for their and local community purposes.
Additionally, some educational projects should be run. Young people have to be prepared to feel engaged in their community, should be taught it’s history. The best way to learn about cultural heritage is to come and see, to touch and listen to important people, places, things. Without education, giving any funds to protect local signs of past days has no chance to be appreciated.
In summary, every way to save cultural heritage of the region is needed. There is enough space for museums and private investments. The key element of passing on the history to the next generations is education, which should be connected with young people engagement in local community issues.
